One year after the pandemic has hit us, masks have become a daily essential. We cannot leave our house without putting one on. They come in all size and shapes, and by now, you might have developed some personal preferences, as well. From cloth to surgical, three-layered to the KF mask, they all provide different levels of protections against bacteria. You have plenty of choices to pick from depending on your surrounding circumstances.

Much like anywhere else in the world, the use of a mask in South Korea is compulsory, especially using public transportation. Every crowded place implies added measures of protection to prevent the spread of the disease. The authorities have announced that the KF94 mask is the most appropriate for use in public transports.
전 세계 어느 곳과 마찬가지로 한국에서도 특히 대중 교통을 이용할 때 마스크를 착용해야합니다. 혼잡 한 장소로 간주되어 질병의 확산을 방지하기 위해 추가 보호가 필요합니다. 당국은 대중 교통 이용시 마스크 KF94를 사용하도록 제안했다고 발표했습니다.
KF stands for ‘Korean filter’ and the number refers to the filtration efficiency – therefore, the efficiency is of 94% against airborne particles as small as 0.3 micron in size. A team of researchers also found that KF94 masks are as effective as N95 masks to filter SARS-CoV-2 particles. Prior to the pandemic, these masks were better known for filtering fine dust and allergic particles that come with seasonal changes.

All international students living in South Korea can easily purchase the KF94 mask pretty much anywhere nowadays. Previously, its sale was limited to pharmacies but they’re now widely available in any convenience store, supermarket or online (in retailers like Coupang and Gmarket). The price ranges from 500KRW to 2,000KRW per piece.
한국에 거주하는 유학생들은 요즘 어디서나 KF94 마스크를 쉽게 구할 수 있습니다. 예전에는 약국 (약국)에서만 판매 할 수 있었지만 지금은 가까운 마트 나 온라인 (쿠팡, 지마켓)에서 구입할 수있습니다. 가격은 한 장에 500 원에서 2000 원 사이입니다.
It’s vital that we all play our roles in curbing the spread of Covid-19, and the best way to ensure we’re doing it is by complying with government guidelines, including always wearing a mask.
Hopefully, the pandemic is closer to ending. But until then, let’s stay healthy and happy even during these trying times.
