한국을 방문하거나 유학을 가고 싶지만 한국어를 못한다면?
Aside from the Korean language (of course!), Korean people learn English at school first. In addition, for several years now, with the rapid development of Korea and its international expansion, whether thanks to K-pop or large companies such as Samsung, Hyundai or SK, mastering English has become an essential ability for young Koreans.
As a result, Koreans under their 30s can generally manage to express simple things in English, at least a few words. However, older people do not speak English at all, and you can only interact with them in Korean.
한국어 (물론이고)를 제외하고 한국인은 학교에서 먼저 영어를 배웁니다. 또한 K-pop이나 삼성, 현대, SK와 같은 대기업 덕분에 한국의 급속한 발전과 해외 진출로 최근 몇 년 동안 영어를 마스터하는 것은 한국 젊은이들에게 필수적인 능력이 되었습니다.
그 결과 30 대 미만의 한국인은 일반적으로 최소한 몇 단어로 간단한 것을 영어로 표현할 수 있습니다. 그러나 노인들은 영어를 전혀 하지 못하며 한국어로만 교류할 수 있습니다.
Apart from English, Koreans usually learn Chinese or Japanese in school as a second language, but have little recollection of it if they don't practice.
So, if you can get by in English, is it possible to travel to Korea without any problem? Not quite. In Seoul, it is possible because it is a very convenient city suitable for foreigners. Everything touristy is translated into English. All metro / bus stations are Romanized thus easy to get your bearings without speaking Korean.
However, outside of Seoul, it can be tricky. Indeed, in small towns or in the countryside, as soon as you leave the tourist spots, the Korean language completely takes over. Everything is written in Hangul (the Korean alphabet), and the local people can barely speak English.
한국인은 영어를 제외하고는 보통 학교에서 제2외국어로 중국어나 일본어를 학습하지만 연습하지 않으면 기억이 거의 없습니다. 그렇다면 영어 능력만 갖고 문제없이 한국 여행이 가능할까요? 완전히 그렇지 않습니다. 서울에서는 외국인에게 적합한 매우 편리한 도시이기 때문에 문제없이 여행행을 할 수 있습니다. 많은 관광객을 끌어들이기 위한 모든 것은 영어로 번역되어 있습니다. 모든 지하철, 버스 정류장은 로마자로 표기되어 있어 한국어를 하지 않아도 쉽게 알 수 있습니다.
그러나 서울 밖에서는 힘들 수도 있습니다. 참으로 작은 마을이나 시골에서는 관광지에 떠나가도 거기서 한국어가 완전히 우세합니다. 모든 것이 한글로 쓰여져 있고 현지 사람들은 영어를 거의 할 줄 모릅니다.
If you want to make your trip/stay to Korea a success, the best advice you can receive is: learn Hangul!
It will take you about an hour to learn it and you can practice it for about ten minutes a day to be able to read Korean faster and faster. Being able to read Hangul can truly make you get your money’s worth insofar as you will be able to:
read menus, if you can read “bibimbap”, “bulgogi”, “kimchi” ... etc., then you can order your favorite dishes
• read any useful information written in Hangul
• travel outside Seoul and descry, discover beautiful little tourist spots
And if you have some time, I strongly recommend that you learn a few Korean words. Indeed, your trip/stay will be totally successful if you manage to communicate a little with Koreans; local people who will be able to make you discover Korean culture, outside of the tourist areas.

In addition, online translators are still very approximate when it comes to Korean, so much the language is constructed differently from English or Romance languages in general.
Finally, Koreans will look at you with a very human eye if you respect their culture and express yourself in Korean.
