[Interview] "Have fun even while you're studying hard..!" Ways to enjoy life in Korea as a foreign student
한류는 세계적으로 주목받고 있어 한국에 여행하거나 유학하러 오는 외국인들은 매년 증가하고 있다. 물론 코로나 때문에 2년동안 관광객 수 많이 떨어졌지만 코로나 완화된 후 다시원래 대로 돌아가고 있다. 그러나 다른 나라에서 생활하는 것이 쉽지 않기 마련이다. 다른 문화, 다른 언어, 다른 사회이다 보니까 특히 장기체류하는 외국인들에게는 힘든 점이 많을 수도 있다. 그래서 Global Reporters기자단은 이번 기사로 한국에 있는 유학생들에게 한국에서 어떻게생활을 즐길 수 있을지, 유학하면서 좋은 추억을 어떻게 만들 수 있는지, 지금 한국에서 유학하고 있는 유학생들을 짧은 인터뷰를 해서 유학생 입장으로서 다양한 즐기는 법을 공유한다.
As Hallyu gains attention of many across the globe, the number of foreigners who come to Korea for travel or for pursuing their studies, is increasing every year. Due to COVID-19, the number of tourists fell drastically, but now with the easing of regulations on COVID-19, it is once again going back to what it was before. However, living in another country is definitely not easy. Foreigners may have a hard time due to the different culture, language and society. Hence, in this article, Global Reporters will share some tips on enjoying life in Korea, gained through interviews with students currently in Korea on how they enjoy life and make good memories while living in Korea. 1. 자기소개해 주세요. 한국에 왜 오셨는지, 얼마나 되셨는지 알려주세요.
하나: 안녕하세요. 저는 말레이시아에서 왔고 만 나이로 22살 하나입니다. GKS장학금을 지원했는데 운이 좋게 합격을 해서 한국에서 지금 강원대학교 다니고 있습니다. 이제는 1학년이 끝났으니까 여기서 온지 거의 1년이 된 것 같습니다.
파라흐노즈: 안녕하세요! 저는 타지키스탄에서 온 파라흐노즈라고 합니다. 저는 건국대학교 대학원생입니다. 한국에 온지 1년 반이 되었습니다.
한시카: 안녕하세요! 저는 스리랑카에서 온 Hansika 라고 합니다. 현재 고려대학교에서 전기공학전공으로 석사과정을 밟고 있습니다. 한국에서 온 지 2년이 되었습니다.
2. 한국에서 자유시간을 있으면 주로 어디로 가거나, 뭘 하세요?
하나: 학생으로서 자유시간이 그렇게 많진 않지만 있으면 서울에 갑니다. 우리 학교는 춘천에 있다 보니까 서울과 거리가 생각보다 그렇게 멀진 않습니다. 서울은 한국의 수도권이라서 다양한 행사와 전시회들이 많이 열립니다. 주로 아티스트들의 행사에 가고 미디어 아트 전시회를 자주 보러 갔습니다. 그리고 서울에서 영화 보는 것도 재미있습니다. 무대인사 같은 행사가 많이 하기 때문에 영화 배우를 볼 기회가 많습니다.
(기자: 오! . 콘서트나 전시회 티켓을 주로 어디서 구매합니까? 티케팅을 할 때 팁이 있으면 알려 주세요
하나: 한국 티케팅 시스템이 잘 되어 있습니다. 그래서 개인적으로 저는 인터파크 아니면 옥션에서 티켓을 많이 구합니다. 한국에서 티케팅 하기가 쉽진 않지만 팁 하나 알려드리자면 빠른 클릭하기 위해 꼭 마우스로 티켓팅 해야 됩니다.)
파라흐노즈: 한국에서 놀 수 있는 곳이 진짜 많은데 저는 자유시간 있을 때 항상 친구들을 만나서 산책이나 다른 액티비티를 하면서 시간 같이 보냅니다.
한시카: 한국에서 여러장소를 방문하고새로운 친구들을만나 즐거운시간을 보냅니다. 시간이 있을때 한강, 궁, 공원 관광객들이 많이가는 유명한곳에 가는것을 좋아합니다. 특히 제가제일 좋아하는곳은 제주도입니다.
3. 한국 생활을 제대로 즐기고 싶으면 꼭 해야 하는 1가지 추천한다면….? 아니면 한국에 오면 꼭 해야 한 것 1가지!
하나: 대학축제 보러가는 것입니다! 보통 봄과 가을에 많이 하니까 꼭 놓치지 마시고 한번 가보세요.
파라흐노즈: 한국에 오면 한번이나 꼭 노래방에 놀러가야 한다고 생각합니다. 한국에서 노래방이 진짜 많고 문 안 닫고24시간이라서 언제든 갈 수 있습니다.
한시카: 자주 사용하는(일상에 사용하는) 한국어 문구를배우는 것을추천합니다. 한국에서 최대한 문제없이살 수있는 데에확실히 도움이될 것이라고생각합니다. 또한 한국에서 한국음식을도전하고 다양한경험을 하는것이 좋다고생각합니다.
4. 지금까지 한국 생활을 하면서 가장 의미 있는 경험 이야기해 주세요 (장소나, 하는 일 등)
하나: 저는 했던 일들 중에 가장 의의 있는 경험은 미디어 아트 전시회 ‘한국의 신비로운 12가지 이야기’ 였습니다. 거기에서 한국의 문화를 많이 배웠었고 좋은 사람과 예쁜 추억을 만들 수 있었습니다.
파라흐노즈: 잊어버릴 수 없는 기억은 부산에 있는 해동용궁사에 갔던 날입니다. 해동용궁사가 되게 아름답고 믿을 수 없는만큼 훌륭했습니다.
한시카: 한국에서 생활하면서가장 좋은점은 다른나라에서 온사람이나 새로운친구를 만날수 있는것이라고 생각합니다. 몰론 다른나라에서 공부하는것이 힘들지만가장 힘든것은 생활하는것이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 그힘든 생활을해소하는 방법은다른 나라에서온 사람을만나는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 한국에서같은 외국인이고여러 나라에서온 사람을알게 되니까가장 의미있는 것같지 않을까싶습니다. 쉽게 말하면 한국에서생활하면서 가장감사한 점은다른 나라에서온 친구들을만난 것입니다.
5. 한국에처음온유학생들에게앞으로한국생활을후회를않기위해남기고싶은말이있다면…
하나: 제가 하고 싶은 말은 한국에서 열심히 공부하면서 자기 시간도 필요하다고 생각하기 때문에 여기저기 돌아다니고 정보도 얻고 추억도 만들어야 합니다.
파라흐노즈: 드라마에 나오는 생활을 기대하지 않고 오면 좋겠습니다!
한시카:처음에는 한국생활에 적응하는것이 쉽지않았습니다. 한국어를 어느 정도알면 생활을즐기고 빠르게적응하는 데많은 도움이됩니다. 또한 다양한 종류의음식을 먹어보는것은 내삶을 더흥미롭게 만들어주었다고생각합니다. 한국에 올 의향이있거나 한국에올 기회가있는 사람이있다면 한국어의기초를 배우고한국 사람들의문화와 사고방식을이해하려고 노력이필수라고 조언합니다. 유튜브나 다른매체를 통해서한국과 관련된동영상을 보는것이 추천합니다. 이런 것들은한국생활에 쉽게적응하는 데도움이 될것이라고 생각하기때문입니다.

Q1. Please introduce yourself. Tell us why you came to Korea, and how long you have been here.
Hana: Hello. I am Hana, 22 years in international age and from Malaysia. I applied for the GKS scholarship and fortunately got accepted, so I am now attending Gangwon University. I have just ended my first year in university, so I've been in Korea for a year.
Farahnoz: Hello! My name is xxx from Tajikistan. I am a graduate student in Konkuk University. It's been a year and a half since I came to Korea.
Hansika: Hello! I am Hansika, from Sri Lanka. I am currently doing my masters in Electrical Engineering in Korea University. It's been 2 years since I came to Korea.
Q2: While in Korea, where do you go and what do you do in your free time? Hana: Although there's not much free time as a student, when there is any, I go to Seoul. Our school is in Chuncheon, so the distance to Seoul is not that far. As Seoul is Korea's capital city, there are many events and exhibitions held there. Usually, I go to artist-related events or media art exhibitions. I also enjoy watching movies in Korea. That's because there are always stage greetings for the movie screenings and many opportunities to see the actors. (GR Reporter: Oh! Where do you normally buy tickets for concerts of exhibitions? Tell us some tips if any? Hana: The ticketing system in Korea is well-developed. So personally, I usually purchase tickets from Interpark or Auction. It's not easy to obtain tickets in Korea, but if there's a tip, using a mouse will help you to click faster during the ticketing process!)
Farahnoz: There are many places to play in Korea - when I have free time I always meet my friends and have a walk or another activity to spend together.
Hansika: I visit a few places and spend an enjoyable time with new friends. When I have free time, I like to go to famous tourist spots like the Han River, palaces, or parks. One of the places I like most is Jeju-do.
Q3. If there's one thing you would recommend when it comes to enjoying life in Korea....? Or one thing that international students must do in Korea!
Hana: Going to university festivals! Usually they're held in Spring and Fall so don't miss them and go for it at least once.
Farahnoz: If you come to Korea you have to go to the karaoke at least once. There are so many in Korea, and they're usually open for 24hours, so you can go any time.
Hansika: I recommend learning simple daily Korean words. I think it will be very helpful to live in Korea with as little problems as possible. Also I think it's important to try Korean food and various experiences in Korea.
Q4: Tell us about the most meaningful experience you've had in Korea so far (a place, something you did etc.) Hana: Out of all the experiences I've had, the most meaningful one was when I went to 'Korea's 12 Mysterious Stories' media art exhibition. I learnt much about Korean culture there, and made beautiful memories with good people.
Farahnoz: One memory I will never forget is when I went to the Haedongyonggung-sa temple in Busan. The temple is very beautiful and it was unbelievably outstanding.
Hansika: I think the best thing about living in Korea is meeting friends from other countries and making new friends. Studying in another country is undoubtedly difficult, but the most difficult thing is daily living. One way to escape this difficult life is to meet international friends. This is because we are all foreigners and we meet people from everywhere, which makes it meaningful. To put it simply, what I'm most thankful for while living in Korea is meeting friends from other countries.
Q5: If you could leave a word for students who are coming to Korea for the first time, so that they won't have regrets...
Hana: What I would want to say is even while studying hard, you need to have time for yourself, so go to places and gain information and make memories.
Farahnoz: It would be great if you come to Korea without expecting life to be like what you see in dramas!
Hansika: At first, it would not be easy to adjust to life in Korea. But if you know some Korean, you can enjoy life and it would be helpful for you to adapt (to life in Korea) quickly. Also, I think that eating a variety of foods made my life exciting. For those who have an inclination to come to Korea, or have the opportunity to, I would advise learning basic Korean and put in effort to learn Korea's culture and mindset. I recommend watching Korea-related videos on Youtube or any other platforms, as I think that these would be helpful in quick adaptation to Korean life.
