Any fans of the K-drama ‘Mr. Sunshine’ here? If so, you’ve landed on the right page because today we’ll be telling you all about our recent visit to the set of the famous action period drama.
For those who do not know it, ‘Mr. Sunshine’ depicts the story of a boy who leaves Korea for the United States, following the 1871 Shinmiyangyo incident. He later returns to his homeland as an American soldier and falls for a noblewoman in 1871. This is a period when Korea was undergoing significant changes.
It was a highly anticipated drama with a star-studded cast like Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-ri, created by writer Kim Eun Sook and director Lee Eung Bok, who previously collaborated on hit dramas such as ‘Descendants of the Sun’ and ‘Goblin’.
The drama production was set in Nonsan, located in the Chungcheongnam province. This region was chosen as it best illustrates how the Korean empire and Japanese colonialism looked like in the early 1900s. The extensive set included buildings, era-appropriate transportation (such as streetcars), bridges, and city walls, which were featured as sets for Hotel Glory and the office of the American embassy on the show.
Fortunately, the filming locations for this well-known K-drama are now open to the public for visiting as the aptly named ‘Sunshine Land’.

모르는 분들을 위해 “미스터 선샤인”은 1871년 신미양요 사건이후 한국을 떠나 미국으로 왔습니다. 나중에 그는 미군으로서 고향으로 돌아와 귀족녀이랑 사랑의 이야기입니다. 이병헌, 김태리와 같은 유명한 배우들과 “태양의 후예”와 “도깨비”같은 히트 드라마를 공동 작업했던 김은숙 작가와 이응복 감독이 만든 대망의 드라마입니다.
"미스터 선샤인” 제작은 1900년대 초 한국 제국과 일본 식민주의의 모습을 보여주기 위해 충청남도 논산에서 실제 야외 세트를 디자인했습니다. 광범위한 세트에는 건물, 시대에 적합한 교통 수단 (예 : 전차), 다리 및 도시 성벽이 포함되어 있으며,이 세트는 드라마에서 호텔 글로리와 미국 대사관 사무실의 세트로 등장했습니다.
THE SUNSHINE LAND
Sunshine Land is a complex cultural space where you can indulge in a military experience and visit the set of dramas and movies from the 1900s to the 1950s. It’s not a meek exhibition hall that you can only see with your eyes, but instead, something that the visitors can experience in a variety of ways. And people of all ages can certainly have a good time here.

It’s a complex that K-drama fans simply must visit. But for now, we are going to be focusing on the Sunshine Studio, the one we visited, and give you a closer look at what is inside and how it is like to be ‘Mr.Sunshine’ Eugene Choi and Go Ae Shin for a day.
선샤인 랜드
선샤인 랜드는 충청남도 논산에 위치한 복합 문화 공간으로 군사 체험과 1900 ~ 1950 년대 드라마와 영화를 볼 수 있습니다. 눈으로만 볼 수 는 단순한 전시관이 아니라 다양한 체험을 할 수있어 남녀 노소 누구나 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있습니다. 선샤인 랜드에서는 다음과 같은 흥미로운 어트랙션을 즐길 수 있습니다.

K- 드라마 장면 설정을 좋아하는 분이라면 꼭 가봐야 할 복합 명소입니다. 하지만 지금은 아까 방문했던 선샤인 스튜디오에 집중 해 내부가 무엇이고, 하루 동안 선샤인 씨의 최유진과 신고 애가 어떤 모습인지 자세히 살펴 보도록하겠습니다.
REPLICATING MR. SUNSHINE AT SUNSHINE STUDIO
Sunshine Studio was first opened on New Year’s Day in 2018. It is a colonial-era film set built for and named after the famous k-drama series ‘Mister Sunshine’. As we mentioned before, it is best known for “Sunshine Land”, which is located in the Hwanghwajeong village in Nonsan City.
It’s fairly easy to reach once you arrived in Nonsan City either by bus or train. You can get there directly by taking another local bus or a taxi if it’s more convenient for you. It’s open all week long from 10 am to 6 pm, with the exception of Wednesdays, the last entry being at 5.30 pm. The admission fee is only 7000KRW but if you live in Nonsan, you can get a discount of up to 50% by showing your Alien Registration Card or passport.
Immediately upon entering, you'll be able to view the whole set of ‘Mr. Sunshine from a little upper hill. From there, you can see both traditional and modern buildings exactly they were on the show. After all, the most important scenes of Mr. Sunshine were filmed at this location.
선샤인 스튜디오에서 미스터 선샤인 재현
선샤인 스튜디오는 2018 년 설날에 처음 문을 열었습니다. 유명한 K 드라마 시리즈 인 '미스터 선샤인'의 이름을 딴 식민지 시대 영화 세트입니다. 앞서 언급했듯이 논산시 황화정 마을에 위치한 '선샤인 랜드'로 가장 잘 알려져있다.
논산시에 도착하면 버스 나 기차로 쉽게 갈 수 있습니다. 더 편리한 경우 다른 지역 버스나 택시를 타면 바로 갈 수 있습니다. 매주 수요일을 제외하고 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 열려 있으며 마지막 입장은 오후 5시 30 분입니다. 입장료는 7000원에 불과하지만 논산에 거주하는 경우 외국인 등록증 또는 여권을 제시하면 최대 50%까지 면허증을 받을 수 있습니다.
들어가 자마자 조금 높은 언덕에서 미스터 선샤인 세트 전체를 볼 수 있습니다. 거기에서 쇼에 있던 전통적인 건물과 현대 건물을 모두 볼 수 있습니다. 결국 미스터 선샤인의 가장 중요한 장면이 이곳에서 촬영되었습니다.
The Glory Hotel
Once you walk down the hill, you will be welcomed by the majestic Glory Hotel, the official hangout, and residence for Eugene Choi (Lee Byung Hun) and Kim Hee Seong (Byun Yo-han) owned by the fierce Kudo Hina (Kim Min Jung). On the 1st floor, of course, you’ll find the lobby, along with a small theatre and gift shop.
Climb the stairs to the 2nd floor and you will walk into a small café called ‘Sunshine Gabaejung’, where you can grab a cup of coffee and take in the views from the terrace of the iconic Glory Hotel.
더 글로리 호텔
언덕을 내려 가면 사나운 쿠도히나 (김민정)가 소유 한 최유진 (이병헌)과 김희성 (변요한)의 공식 행아웃 이자 거주지 인 웅장한 글로리 호텔이 여러분을 맞이할 것입니다. 물론 1층에는 작은 극장과 선물 가게와 함께 로비가 있습니다.
2층 계단을 올라가면 '선샤인 가배정'이라는 작은 카페가 나옵니다. 이곳에서 커피 한 잔을 들고 상징적 인 글로리 호텔의 테라스에서 전망을 감상 할 수 있습니다.
Travel Back In Time
While exploring the whole set in the village, there are plenty of spots that will make you reminisce about the drama. The main area would be the restoration of Jongno stores in the 1900s and the market with the boulangerie where Goo Dong Mae (Yoo Yeon Seok) sees Go Ae-shin (Kim Tae-ri) for the first time since they were children.
You’ll also notice that this is where the scenes that feature Hwalollu (Japanese bar where the three men would meet and drink), the pawnshop owned by the two former slave hunters, Go Ae-shin’s residence, and the first-ever railway car in Hanseong (Seoul’s old name), Blancher Bakery Store, Bosingak Pavilion and many more were filmed.
If you wish to take your ‘Mr. Sunshine’ experience to the next level, you can rent a costume just like the one in the series. You can also rent a hanbok at the costume rental shop at Marshal Kuan-Han’s restored building. Find the shop by looking for the ‘Sunshine Salon’ sign written on the wall near the tram.
시간 여행
마을 전체를 둘러 보면서 드라마를 떠올리게하는 장소가 많이 있습니다. 주요 지역은 1900 년대 종로점 복원과 구동 매 (유연석)가 어렸을 때부터 처음으로 고애신 (김태리)을 만나는 블랑제리 시장입니다.
또한 이곳에는 화 룰루 (세 남자가 만나 술을 마시는 일본식 술집), 전 노예 사냥꾼 두 사람이 소유 한 전당포, 고애신의 집, 그리고 최초의 철도 차량이 등장하는 장면이 있습니다. 한성 (서울의 옛 이름), 블랑쉬 베이커리 스토어, 보신각 파빌리온 등이 촬영되었습니다.

Instagram-Worthy Spots
Two of the main spots that seem to be a favorite for Instagram pictures are the Hansung Electric Tram and the bridge where Eugene Choi and Go Ae-shin meet for the first time on the night of the American minister’s assassination. This spot is also known for being the place where some couples choose to have their pre-wedding photoshoot! It is indeed a romantic and iconic place.
As these two are quite popular, you might have to wait a bit in the queue. And here’s a fun suggestion: make sure to ring the train’s bell-like they used to.
Here are a few post-edited pictures that will give you a feel of what it’s like to be there with the snow. It does take the romanticism up a notch, doesn’t it?

Sunset at Daehan Gate
Daehan Gate is the main gate of Deoksugung Palace in the series. It is the perfect setting to end your ‘Mr. Sunshine’ journey as you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the sunset from there.
Therefore, we would recommend you visit the Sunshine Studio at 3 pm -ish in the afternoon, as it wouldn’t be too hot/cold (depending on the season you visit in) nor too bright, so you can take plenty of pictures and enjoy the memorable sunset with this incredible historical-themed background.
대한문 황혼
대한문은 시리즈의 덕수궁 정문입니다. 그곳에서 아름다운 일몰을 감상 할 수 있으므로 “미스터 선샤인” 여행을 끝내기에 완벽한 설정입니다.
따라서 오후 3시에 선샤인 스튜디오를 방문하는 것이 좋습니다. 덥거나 춥거나 (방문하는 계절에 따라 다름) 너무 밝지 않기 때문에 많은 사진을 찍고 즐길 수 있습니다. 이 놀라운 역사적 테마 배경으로 기억에 남는 일몰입니다.
