A Day Trip to Gyeongju 경주에서의 하루

If you’ve been in Korea for a while, it’s very likely you’ve heard about Gyeongju – the country’s former capital and undeniable cultural hub. Walking through the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Silla is like being transported back in time. You won’t see any tall buildings, bright lights, and traffic commotion.

만약에 여러분이 한국에 잠시 머물렀다면, 여러분은 한국의 수도이자 부인할 수 없는 문화의 중심지인 경주에 대해 들어봤을 것입니다. 고대 신라의 수도를 걷는 것은 옛날로 거슬러 올라가는 것과 같습니다. 높은 건물, 밝은 조명, 교통 소란 등은 보이지 않을 것입니다.

Last year, after having visited most of Korea’s main metropolises, I started to crave some authenticity in historical sceneries, something less altered by the modern hand. So, on a crisp (yet sunny) winter Saturday morning, I gathered a couple of close friends and well made the drive from Daegu to Gyeongju.

Of course, if you don’t have a car or a license, you can get there by train from any of the major cities. We just enjoy the occasional road trip and our dedicated playlists.

작년에는 한국의 주요 대도시들을 대부분 방문한 후, 저는 현대인의 손으로 덜 변한 역사적 풍경에 대한 진정성을 갈망하기 시작했습니다. 그래서 화창한 겨울 토요일 아침, 저는 친한 친구 몇 명을 모아서 대구에서 경주까지 드라이브를 잘 했습니다.

물론, 자동차나 면허증이 없다면 주요 도시에서 기차를 타고 갈 수 있습니다. 저희는 가끔 가는 여행과 저희의 전용 재생 목록을 즐길 뿐입니다.

We realized we didn’t have time to see everything properly, so we decided to have lunch once we got there and see how much we could see within walking distance before it go too dark.

The places we chose to visit, perhaps because these were the most uniquely different to everything I had seen so far in Korea, were the Daereungwon Tomb Complex and the Wolji Pond.

저희는 모든 것을 제대로 볼 시간이 없다는 것을 깨달았고, 일단 그곳에 도착하면 점심을 먹고 너무 어두워지기 전에 걸어서 갈 수 있는 거리에 얼마나 많은 것을 볼 수 있는지 보기로 했습니다.

지금까지 한국에서 보았던 모든 것들과 가장 독특하게 달라서인지 저희가 선택한 곳은 대릉원묘단지와 월지못이었습니다.

The first stop was Daereungwon, for which we paid only KRW2,000 each. The tomb complex is the resting place of ancient kings and noblemen. It’s said that the bigger the hill (tomb), the more influential was the person that lays in it.

There were two that had an entrance to a makeshift museum inside - Cheonmachong and the Hwangnamdaechong – which contained a lot of antique artifacts and relics that belonged to the ancient royals.

We ended up spending a couple of hours here, just roaming around and taking Insta-worthy pictures – as one does. By the time we left the grounds, we realized we wouldn’t have enough time to see much more, as most attractions will not stay open until too late. There was one place on the list we wanted to visit at a specific time, so we took a coffee break to give our legs a rest.

첫 번째 정류장은 대릉원인데, 대릉원 하나당 2000원 냈습니다. 이 무덤 단지는 고대 왕과 귀족들의 안식처입니다. 언덕이 클수록 그 안에 누워 있는 사람이 더 영향력이 있었다고 합니다.

천마총과 황남대총 등 고대 왕실의 유물과 유물을 많이 소장하고 있는 임시 박물관의 입구가 있는 두 곳이 있었습니다.

저희는 이곳에서 몇 시간을 보내며, 그저 여기저기 돌아다니며 인스타그램에 가치가 있는 사진을 찍었습니다. 저희가 그 땅을 떠날 때쯤, 저희는 더 이상 볼 수 있는 시간이 충분하지 않다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 대부분의 볼거리들은 너무 늦게까지 문을 열지 않을 것이기 때문입니다. 특정 시간에 가고 싶은 곳이 한 군데 있어서, 저희는 휴식을 취하기 위해 커피를 마시며 휴식을 취했습니다.

That last place was obviously Wolji Pond, which we intended to visit at sunset, so we could see the temples come alive after dark and their lights reflected in the water, creating a truly regal atmosphere. Clearly, we weren’t the only ones aware of this as many people gathered around the pond, waiting patiently for about half an hour so they wouldn’t miss the show. At this point, it was starting to get quite cold – as it would on a January evening – but the captivating landscape truly managed to warm our hearts.

If you’re planning to visit Gyeongju, don’t miss the chance to visit the Cheomseongdae Observatory (the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in all of Asia), Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto (designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for being “a masterpiece of Buddhist art in the Far East). There are the spots on my list for my next trip there – if I manage to get there early enough. There is also a hanok village, but it’s not unlike any other in Korea. Besides, most houses and structures in Gyeongju preserve their traditional architecture, so you’ll get the feel just by roaming around the town.

마지막 장소는 분명히 해질녘에 방문하려고 했던 월지 연못으로, 날이 저물면 절들이 살아나고 그 불빛이 물속에 비치는 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다. 확실히, 많은 사람들이 연못 주변에 모여, 그들이 공연을 놓치지 않기 위해 30분 정도 인내심을 가지고 기다렸기 때문에, 저희만 이 사실을 알고 있었던 것은 아닙니다. 이 시점에서, 1월 저녁과 마찬가지로 꽤 추워지기 시작했지만, 매혹적인 풍경은 저희의 마음을 따뜻하게 해주었습니다.

경주를 방문할 계획이라면 첨성대 전망대(아시아 전역에서 가장 오래된 천문대), 불국사, 석굴암(극동 불교 예술의 걸작으로 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정)을 방문할 기회를 놓치지 마세요. 다음 번 여행에는 제가 갈 수 있는 장소가 목록에 있습니다. 만약 제가 그곳에 일찍 도착한다면요. 한옥 마을도 있지만, 한국의 다른 마을과 다르지 않습니다. 게다가, 경주의 대부분의 집들과 건물들은 그들의 전통 건축물을 보존하고 있기 때문에, 여러분은 단지 시내를 돌아다니는 것만으로도 그 느낌을 받을 수 있습니다.

시간이 있다면 경주를 방문할 기회를 확실히 넘겨서는 안 됩니다. 음식, 독특한 분위기, 아름다운 역사적 풍광 등 단연코 전국에서 가장 정통적으로 즐길 수 있는 한인타운입니다.
