길거리 음식 문화의 상징인 포장마차
If you are a kdrama lover, you may have seen these establishments a lot. Usually referred to as “Pojangmacha”, they are small food stalls operating from a tent. They are the best places to have a long cry, whine and crib about life or have a long and deep conversation about life. Koreans love coming here, to mull over their life, worries and organize their thoughts over a cold alcoholic beverage.

These small tent shaped stalls serve cheap yet delicious snacks along with ample drinks. They are an integral part of Seoul’s street culture. And a person who has been there a few times, I can vouch for that: the vibe is totally different. These tent-stalls sell various street snacks such as hotteok, gimbap, tteokbokki, sundae, dakkochi (Korean skewered chicken), odeng, mandu, and anju (dishes accompanied with drinking) and lots of other fried delicacies.

Accompanied with lots of drinks such as soju, maekju and makgeolli, these are the perfect places to gorge on some fried snacks on a rainy evening or a super chilly winter night. Some places also sell warm soups (with seafood or lots of meat and noodles).
Pojangmacha literally means "covered wagon" in Korean; Pojang means wrapped and macha refers to a carriage or a wagon. They are built in such a manner that the owners can easily install them wherever they want to. The customers sit on small stools or benches. On clear nights, you can eat outside while on rainy days and in bitter cold winter, you can sit inside the tent. The owners even install heaters inside to make it all cozy and warm so that you can enjoy your food even when it is freezing outside.
소주, 맥주, 막걸리와 같은 많은 음료와 함께, 이곳은 비 오는 저녁이나 매우 추운 겨울 밤에 튀긴 간식을 먹기에 완벽한 장소이다. 어떤 곳에서는 따뜻한 수프도 판매합니다.
포장마차는 한국어로 "덮인 마차"를 의미하고, 포장은 포장된 마차 또는 마차를 의미한다. 소유자가 원하는 곳에 쉽게 설치할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다. 손님들은 작은 변기나 벤치에 앉는다. 맑은 밤에는 비가 오는 날 밖에서 식사를 할 수 있고 매서운 추운 겨울에는 텐트 안에 앉을 수 있다. 주인들은 심지어 실내에 난방기를 설치해 아늑하고 따뜻하게 해주기 때문에 바깥 날씨가 추울 때도 음식을 즐길 수 있다.
The atmosphere in a pojangmacha is unique. Here you can feel the very soul of the establishment. Being in the pojangmacha, out in the open, makes you feel vulnerable, and often serves the perfect background and inspires people to open their heart out. Be it office worker or a college student, or some middle aged ahjussi, everyone is welcome here.
포장마차의 분위기는 독특하다. 이곳에서 당신은 기득권층의 혼을 느낄 수 있다. 야외에 있는 포장마차에 있는 것은 여러분을 연약하게 만들고, 종종 완벽한 배경을 보여주며, 사람들이 마음을 열도록 영감을 줍니다. 직장인이든 대학생이든, 중년의 아흐시든, 누구나 환영합니다.
It is one of the best things about pojangmacha. It brings people from all different levels together and they can mingle and drink together.
