The Academy of Korean Studies is a renowned institution that encourages understanding Korea and its culture, mainly focusing on popularizing such knowledge among foreigners in different parts of the globe. Besides offering numerous programs for international students and researchers to visit Korea and focus on their academic work, the institute also has an annual Korean Studies Promotion Program that supports overseas Korean Studies research and education and such initiatives organized by foreign scholars in Korea. The program has several key objectives, such as creating Korean Studies content based on domestic Korean Studies research achievements to meet overseas demand. It also aims at establishing infrastructure for overseas Korean Studies research and education through the support of Global Korean Studies hubs. In addition, the program focuses on boosting the capability of domestic and overseas Korean Studies through the support of research, translation, and dictionary compilation. Lastly, it hopes to strengthen the foundation of Korean Studies by collecting fundamental Korean Studies materials and establishing related databases. To achieve these goals, AKS provides financial support, the details of which are listed in the table below.

The Laboratory Program grant is given once as a lump sum in the first year of the three-year project period. Grand Series of Korean Studies Program will select 15 projects for a total of 15 volumes (3 major themes; 5 volumes each per theme). Each volume is supported up to sixty million KRW and should be authored within two years. The above table lists the maximum possible budget for each project. For more details about each program, please refer to the Application Guidelines. The program has certain restrictions on application and participation that need to be addressed. For example, an individual may participate simultaneously in three or fewer projects supported by the Korean Ministry of Education research grants. However, an individual may serve as project director for only two projects. In the case of participation in more than one project, overlapping payment of labor expenses is strictly prohibited. However, the following are not to be counted: 1) projects that end within six months from the application deadline, and 2) certain specially designated projects (as listed in the Korean Application Guidelines). Also, persons under research sanctions as of the application deadline may be restricted from applying.

The application method is online via the KSPS Project Management System (http://ksps-pms.aks.ac.kr), and the documents to be submitted can be found in the application guidelines.

Additional information about the application period and contacts can be found in the table below.

If you do decide to follow up with this program, we wish you the best of luck!
